Everest Basecamp Trek - a Value Package full of exhilaration and experience

Day To Day Itinerary

DAY 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m/4,593 ft) and transfer to hotel. Overnight in hotel.

You may have free time during the day depending on what time you arrive. A briefing will be given by our trekking leader in the late afternoon. He will discuss our trekking program in detail. The evening is free, but usually our tour leader will ask if the travellers want to have a group dinner (optional and at the traveller's own expense) at one of Kathmandu’s fine Nepali restaurants.

DAY 02: Free day in Kathmandu. You can explore the historic city and its hustle and bustle during the day.

Afte the breakfast at the hotel, you can explore city.

DAY 03: Fly to Lukla (2840m/9318ft) and trek to Phakding (2610m/8563ft). Total Walking Time 3 hrs; Distance 8km; Total Ascent 120m; Total Descent 250m.

After breakfast, we head to the domestic airport for a scenic flight to Lukla. After an adventurous 40 minute flight above breathtaking green and white mountains, we reach the Hillary Airport at Lukla. Here we meet our other crew members and after some packing and arrangements, we start our trek. We take it easy on the first day to accllimatise.

DAY 04: Phakding (2610m/8563ft) to Namchey (3440m/11286ft). Total Walking Time 5-6 hrs; Distance 15km; Total Ascent 1150m; Total Descent 100m.

We follow the Bhote Koshi through the beautiful pine forest and pasture land, along the valley with small Sherpa settlements. We cross the Bhote Koshi and climb steeply switching back trail to get to the large Sherpa village of Namche Bazaar. It is the Sherpa people’s capital spread in the shape of a horse-shoe and the gateway to the Everest. The trading market of the village has changed since the early days to cater for tourists more than the historical salt trade from Tibet. Village is culturally rich with Sherpas in Tibetan life style and prevailing Buddhist religion. On the way, view of Everest (8848 m) and Lhotse (8511 m) come into sight. Mt. Thamserku ( 6648 m) and Kwangde Ri (6624 m) loom along the east and west of the village. The sacred mountain Khumbila (5707 m) dominates the skyline along the west. You get to experience the thrill of walking on many suspension bridges, one of which is the famous Hillary Suspension Bridge.

DAY 05: Rest in Namchey (3440m/11286ft) for acclimatisation. Plenty of things to see or options of day hiking in the area.

This is the first of the two scheduled days for acclimatization. Health experts always recommend us to stay active and moving during the rest days instead of being idle. One option is to trek to Thame (3800m) for view and Sherpa village/culture. In Namche, you find ATMs, Internet cafes, shops, restaurants, a bakery and a colorful market each Friday evening and Saturday.

DAY 06: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Thyangboche (3867m).

It is a long climb to Thyangboche; the first half is especially steep. As you climb through the forested zone, the incline eases and a splendid view appears. Continue climbing the mountainside diagonally until you come to the stone gate built by lamas which marks your entry into Thyangboche. A famous monastery lies here. It was re-built with the assistance of Sir Edmund Hillary after it was destroyed by fire in 1989. The most notable peaks seen from here are Kantega, Ama Dablam (perhaps the most beautiful peak in the region) and, of course, Mount Everest.

DAY 07: Trek from Tyangbochey (3860m/12664ft) to Dingboche (4410m/14469ft). Total Walking Time 5-6 hrs.; Distance 13km; Total Ascent 650m; Total Descent 150m.

Ascending down to the Dingboche village, we will see sprawling fields and the settlement of Dingboche overlooked with Chortens and prayer flags.

DAY 08: Acclimatization day in Dingboche.

We spend our second acclimatization day in Dingboche. The moment of having a relaxing breakfast admiring Ama Dablam( 6856m/ 22493 ft) looming to the south is really fantastic.

DAY 09: Trek from Dingboche (4410m/14469ft) to Lobuche (4910m/16109ft). Total Walking Time 5-6 hrs; Distance 9 km; Total Ascent 650m; Total Descent 300m.

The onward journey leads north for up to 50-minutes until you come to a mani-prayer Stupa. The trail is gentle looking down to Pheriche village below. Walk offers views of the Mt.Tawache, Ama Dablam and to the north-Pokalde (5741m) Kongma-tse (5820m) and the great wall of Nuptse. After two hours walk, the trail from Pheriche joins near Dugla (4595m) before a small wooden bridge over the river of Khumbu glacier. Stop at Dugla, for lunch, before continuing for an hour up a steep hill to the top, where there are views of Mt. Pumori and other peaks west of Everest. After a short break, continue trekking up to Lobuche, hidden and sheltered from the wind.

DAY 10: Trek from Lobuche (4910m/16109ft) to Everest Base Camp (5364m/17598ft) and overnight in Gorakshep (5140m/16864ft). Total Walking Time 8 hrs; Total Ascent 580m; Total Descent 250m.

We take trip to base camp. While fascinating with the views of Nuptse, Khumbuste, Pumori mountains, the base camp is not spectacular as the ascent of Kala Pattar because there is no view of Everest itself from here. Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Nuptse, which loom over the Base Camp, shades the view of Everest.

 

We travel along the jumbled moraines and scattered rocks passing by the memorials of Rob Hall and Yasuko Namba and others who perished during the Mt. Everest disaster of 1996. The trail continues on a ridge from where a small glimpse of Mt. Everest can be seen. At the end of the ridge, a scrabbling descent leads to the entry into the Khumbu Glacier. The trail through the glacier is an interesting one in that one can actually feel as if one is inside a fridge with the cold seeping from all sides. The Everest Base Camp is also the site for the base camp for Lhotse and Nuptse. It is not actually a specific site as various expedition have elected different locations for a semi permanent camp during their assault on the mountains.

 

Some of the sites that expeditions have used as base camps are identifiable form debris on the glacier at 5360m or more. However the highlight of the trip to this place is the sight of the Khumbu icefall and the trek along the Khumbu Icefall is an interesting and an exhilarating one.

DAY 11: Trek from Gorakshep (5140m/16864ft) to Kalapathar (5550m/18209ft) and back to Pheriche (4240m/13910ft). Total Walking Time 6-7 hrs; Total Ascent 620m; Total Descent 1450m.

Gork Shep has a small lake that is usually frozen and several monuments to climbers who have died during various Everest expedition. The carved stone in memory of Jake Britenbach of the 1963 US expedition and the monument of Indian Ambassador H Dayal, who died during a visit to base camp after the 1965 Indian expedition, are north-east of the lake.

 

Today is the climax of our However, we need to get prepared for an early morning, dark and cold temperature (-10 to -14 C) departure beforehand. We head off to Kalapatthar, the highest point of the trek. The going is difficult as one heads to the black rock. During the ascent to Kala Patthar we can pause to catch our breath at several outstanding view points to snap pictures. After several hours of an ascent, we reach Kala Patthar. From here we scramble to climb the rocky outcrop near to the summit marked by cairns and prayer flags. As we reach the top, we sit on the Kala Patthar rocks, our eyes taking in the unbelievable Himalayan Panorama, wandering from one mighty massif to another. We take as many pictures as we can with our camera and also capture the moment in our mind for everlasting memory.

DAY 12: Pheriche (4240m/13910ft) to Tyangboche (3860m/12664ft). Total Walking Time 5-6 hrs; Total Ascent 150m; Total Descent 550m.

After the previous day's tiring ascent to Kala Patthar, today is an easier walk down to the lower altitudes. Following the same route back to the terminal moraines at Dughla and following the wide valley of Khumbu Khola we pass through the beautiful Sherpa villages of Pheriche, Orsho, and Shomare to reach Pangboche. From Pangboche we retrace our footsteps down to the Imja Khola and up through the forest to Debuche. Finally, we reach Tengboche. If we are trekking during the full moon of November or December, we might get and opportunity to witness the Mani Rimdu festival in the monastery at Tengboche.

DAY 13: Trek to Namchey (3440m/11286ft). Total Walking Time 6-7 hrs; Total Ascent 480m; Total Descent 350m.

We will trek down through the hillside blanketed by rhododendron and juniper trees. If it's Spring, pink and red rhododendron flowers ablaze our surroundings. We keep a lookout for wild life such as mountain goats, snow leopards, colorful pheasants, etc., while we pass through the forest by the trail. After passing a Chorten, we reach the army camp at of Namche Bazaar. We want to take a long last look (and picture!) back to Lhotse, the tip of Everest and Tengboche from here.

DAY 14: Namchey (3440m/11286ft) to Lukla (2840m/9318ft). Total Walking Time 7 hrs; Total Ascent 350m; Total Descent 1050m.

The trail descends steeply downward so we need to walk slowly and under control as our shaky legs continuously battle the rocky terrain. After crossing the suspension bridges over the fast following Dud Koshi and its tributaries the trail becomes more level and natural. Although we are travelling the same route down, we feel completely different views. We snap a mixture of open plains, rhododendron and pine forests, and in the distance snow covered peaks. We feel the Sherpa villages' impressive faith in Buddhism and culture of prayer stones and prayers flag while we walk through the villages. On arrival in Lukla, we have plenty of time to relax, stretch those sore legs, and recall the experiences of the last couple of weeks. Its a celebration time of a fantastic trek and a safe one.

DAY 15: Fly back to Kathmandu. Afternoon free for shopping and sightseeing.
