Langtang Gosainkunda Trek - Valley of glaciers & spiritual lakes

Day To Day Itinerary

DAY 01: Arrive at hotel (overnight in hotel).

You may have free time during the day depending on what time you arrive. A briefing will be given by our trekking leader in the late afternoon. He will discuss our trekking program in detail. The evening is free, but usually our tour leader will ask if the travellers want to have a group dinner (optional and at the traveller's own expense) at one of Kathmandu’s fine Nepali restaurants.

DAY 02: Drive to Dhunche (1960m/6430ft). Stay overnight in a lodge. Drive time is 6 - 7 hrs.

Dhunche is interesting ethnic town. This town has both modern section and distinct old section full of virtually unchanged Tamang people.

DAY 03: Trek to Thulo Syabru (2250m/7382ft). Total Walking Time 4 hrs; Total Ascent 290m; Total Descent 100m

We start our trek in the morning after breakfast. We walk the flat way spotting various flowers and birds. After crossing the Trisuli Khola (river), we climb steeply through a beautiful forest of blue pine. We may be lucky to spot langur monkeys and red pandas. As we approach Syabru, we can see Langtang valley and the snow peaks of Tibet.

DAY 04: Trek to Rimchey (2455m/8054ft). Total Walking Time 4.5-5 hrs; Total Ascent 940m; Total Descent 800m.

We trek through the trees where langur monkey’s frolic. The trail then makes a steep climb over a rocky ridge and further the route climbs gently to Bamboo jungle. Climbing steeply the trail will get to Rimche.

DAY 05: Trek from Rimchey (2455m/8054ft) to Langtang (3430m/11253ft). Total Walking Time 6 hrs; Total Ascent 1100m; Total Descent 120m.

The trail climbs through a forest of hemlock, oaks, maples and rhododendron observing glimpses of Langtang Lirung. We further climb to Ghora Tabela after which it descends to Thangshyap. The trail further climbs to Langtang village, the head quarter of Langtang National Park.It is the biggest village of the area inhabited by Buddhist Tamangs and Tibetans.

DAY 06: Trek from Langtang (3430m/11253ft) to Kyanjin Gompa (3830m/12566ft) and then to Kyangjin Ri (4773m/15660ft). Total Walking Time 6 hrs; Total Ascent 750m; Total Descent 400m.

The trail winds through the village and climbs gradually past villages, and through yak pastures and long rows of mani-walls where the valley opens out further and the views become more extensive. After crossing several small streams and moraines, the trail reaches a settlement at Kyangjin where we see dramatic icefall flowing from Langtang Lirung (7246m) and Kinshung (6781m). The whole setting is dramatic with snow covered peaks surrounding us in all directions. At this point, you we enjoy the panoramic view of Dorje Larpa (6990m), Langtang Ri (6370m), Langtang Lirung (7245m) and so on. Here is a small monastery and a cheese factory opened in 1955 with Swiss Assistance. It operates during the summer and produces about 7000kg of cheese annually. You can usually buy delicious cheese and curd here.

DAY 07: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa (3830m/12566ft) to Tsergo Ri (4984m/16352ft) and back to kyanjin Gompa. Total Walking Time 8-10 hrs; Total Ascent 1100m; Total Descent 1100m.

Today is a rest day and also an opportunity to explore the natural beauty aroundKyanjin. This makes an excellent base for side trips either immediately above the Gompa to the foot of the Langtang Lirung glacier, eastwards to Langsisa glacier or a tougher and popular ascent of Tserko Ri to the north. From this area there are views west towards Langtang Lirung and the Ganesh Himal. To the south lies the Ganja La Himal and a view of the high pass crossing which leads to Helambu.

DAY 08: Trek from Kyanjin Gompa (3830m/12566ft) to Rimche (2455m/8054ft). Total Walking Time 6 hrs; Total Ascent 140m; Total Descent 1600m.

We descend back down to Rimche through the forest.

DAY 09: Trek from Rimche (2455m/8054ft) to Thulo Syabru (2250m/7382ft). Total Walking Time 6 hrs; Total Ascent 100m; Total Descent 290m.

The route descends steeply through the forest, crossing the river, and then ascends to Thulo Syabru. Thulo Syabru is a big village of Tamang people.

DAY 10: Trek from Thulo Syabru (2250m/7382ft) to Lauribina (3910m/12828ft). Total Walking Time 5-6 hrs; Total Ascent 1660m.

Passing Schools and gompas, the trail climbs up steep hills through forest of hemlock and oak to the top of ridge. From here we may get fine view of Ganesh Himal range. Climbing and passing the government agriculture office, we reach Sing Gompa for panoramic views. From here, the trail climbs gradually up to Chalang pati. We also pass a sanctuary for the red panda. As soon as we reach to Lauribina, we can see the truly magnificent view of Annapurnas, Manaslu (8163m), the four peaks of Ganesh himal and Langtang Lirung.

DAY 11: Trek from Lauribina (3910m/12828ft) to Gosaikunda Lake (4380m/14370ft) and then to Sin Gompa (3250m/10663ft). Total Walking Time 6-7 hrs; Total Ascent 470m; Total Descent 970m.

The route ascends up to a small temple with a statue of Sakyamuni and a further climb gives us good view of the first sacred lake, Saraswati kunda. We trek further for an excellent view of Bhairav Kunda followed by a gentle climb to reach Gosaikund, the picturesque high attitude lake.


There are many lakes. Saraswati Kund , Bhairav Kund, Gosaikunda, Dudh Kund( Milk lake), Chandra kund (Moon lake), Ama Kund (mother lake) and Ragat Kund (blood kund). The large lake is Gosaikund.  Gosaikund Lake has a black rock in the middle, said to be the head of God Shiva. According to legend, Shiva created this high altitude lake by pierced a glacier with his trident (trisul) to obtain water. There is a white rock under the water which is said to be the remnant of an ancient Shiva shrine. Thousands of pilgrims come here to worship and bathe during the full moon festival each august. 


After observing the lakes, we descend back to Sin Gompa passing through Lauribanayak with magnificent mountain views and forests.

DAY 12: Trek from Sin Gompa (3250m/10663ft) to Dhunchey (1960m/6430ft). Total Walking Time 5 hrs; Total Descent 1370m.

The last day of our trek descends through pine, oak and silver rhododendron forests. We cross a suspension bridge over the Sin Gompa stream.

DAY 13: Drive to Kathmandu (Drive time 6 - 7 hrs).

DAY 14: Free day for sightseeing/shopping.
