Your 14 day Annapurna basecamp trek, also known as Sanctuary trek, in Nepal is organised from Australia as a tailored package by Sherpa Tours for your peace of mind offering high quality of service at best price. This is a relatively short trek below an altitude of 4300 metres in one of the top ten trekking destinations in the world, you will be taken to a natural amphitheatre offering a 360-degree view of one of the longest and most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, home to a multitude of mountains above 7000 metres in height, striking biodiversity and a rich local culture.

Our local Nepalese experts based in Australia will assist you in planning your 14 day Annapurna basecamp hike to enjoy the Annapurna mountain range which is a vast massif of several peaks rising above 7,000 metres. Part of this magnificent range forms a natural amphitheatre known as the Annapurna Sanctuary. The Annapurna Himal is ringed by such awe-inspiring giants as Hiunchuli (6441m), Annapurna South (7219m), Annapurna I (8091m, the 10th highest in the world), Annapurna II (7939m), Gangapurna (7454m), Fang (7647m) and Annapurna III (7555m).The breathtaking sunrises over the snow-capped mountains together with the appearance of the ‘big tail’ (double summit) of ‘Mt. Fishtail’ (Machapuchare) are truly mind-blowing. Other highlights include the ever-changing landscape of deep subtropical valleys, rice fields, misty forests and tiny villages, incredible rhododendron and bamboo forests, beautiful jungle and, finally, high desert landscapes.

Day To Day Itinerary

DAY 01: Arrive at hotel (overnight in hotel).

You may have free time during the day depending on what time you arrive. A briefing will be given by our trekking leader in the late afternoon. He will discuss our trekking program in detail. The evening is free, but usually our tour leader will ask if the travellers want to have a group dinner (optional and at the traveller's own expense) at one of Kathmandu’s fine Nepali restaurants.

DAY 02: Free day in Kathmandu (1,400 m/4,593 ft) for sightseeing and shopping.

DAY 03: Transfer to Pokhara (827 m/2,713 ft). Evening stroll around the Lake Side, Pokhara (overnight in hotel).

DAY 04: Drive to Nayapool (1070m/3510ft) and trek to Ghandruk (1940m/6365ft). Total Driving Time 1.5 - 2 hrs; Total Walking Time 6 - 7 hrs; Total Ascent 900m.

Early in the morning, we have our breakfast and drive to Nayapul which takes approximately 1 hour from Pokhara. This drive will give us the first impression of Mount Fishtail with its split peak.

We start our trek from Nayapool walking along Modi river for some time. At Birethati, we cross the river and slowly commence a trek steep uphill for about 5//6 hrs to reach Ghandrung.

Ghandruk (1940m), the picturesque town of slate-roofed Gurung people who are traditionally Buddhist is the headquarters of Annupurna Conservation Area.

DAY 05: Trek to Chomrong at 2170m/7119ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 5 hrs; Total Ascent 300m; Total Descent 300m.

After having your breakfast; you will be starting your trek to Chomrong, a big Gurung village in Annapurna region. Until the Kimrong Khola (stream) the trail descends and after Kimrong Khola, the trail starts heading back ups to get to Chomrong village. This beautiful village lies at the base of Mt. Himal Chuli.

DAY 06: Trek to Dovan at 2600m/8530ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 6.5 hrs; Total Ascent 600m; Total Descent 150m.

Today, we will be getting one step closer to the ‘Annapurna Sanctuary’, the massive amphitheatre.

We start our trek by going down to Chomrong river through beautiful stone step trails. We follow the Modi Khola once again and pass through a suspension bridge over the Chomrong river before ascending steeply up to Sinuwa at 2340 meters. Heading along a contour line, we traverse and then reach the hamlet of Bamboo 2350 meters. After Sinuwa, the trail goes through dense Bamboo forest and Bamboo village from where you make a gentle ascent and cross at least three steams before reaching Dovan, which locally means a two-cross of rivers.

DAY 07: Trek to Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3700m/1239ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 7 hrs; Total Ascent 1200m.

The real fun begins as we truly enter the sanctuary today and arrive at Machapuchare Base Camp at 3700 meters. The whole trail goes uphill through beautiful ever green forest on the shadow of Mt. Fishtail. On the way, we cross number of avalanches and pass by small cave called Hinku in addition to many abandoned hamlets, shrines and rock shelters on our 1200 metre climb to the base camp first used in 1957. This is a long day and we may begin to feel the effects of the altitude on our bodies. The pace is steady enjoying the closest views of Mt. Fishtail, Annapurnas and Mt. Gangapurna. Finally the beautiful Machhapuchre Base Camp offers us the very best close view of Mt. Fishtail in front of our eyes. Here we spend a day gazing away at the snow covered peaks above and the beauty of the landscape around.

DAY 08: Trek and explore Annapurna Base Camp at 4130m/13550ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 2 hrs; Total Ascent 700m; Total Descent 300m.

Finally, the final day to Annapurna Base Camp is a short walk and full of fun. On the first part, the trail goes slightly up and after so almost flat to the Sanctuary and passes through roofless small shepherds huts along the side of moraine. Normally, this area is snow bounded and quite windy. The Annapurna Base Camp gives us 360 degree view of silver lighting mountains in eye popping distance. On the first part, the trail goes slightly up and after so almost flat to the Sanctuary and passes through roofless small shepherds huts along the side of moraine.

DAY 09: Trek back to Himalaya Hotel at 2920m/9580ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 5 hrs; Total Descent 1280m.

The path up here is not particularly steep. And we find this stretch very pleasant, a gentle uphill stroll along the river, through the tranquil meadows with many boulders to rest upon and gaze in awe at the surrounding peaks. From here the panorama is breath taking. Annapurna I rear above rubble covered glacier while to the south Himchuli and Annapurna South loom behind. Machhapuchre (Mt. Fishtail) is magnificent and even Annapurna III can be seen. Climbing a moraine with a few rock cairns to the south gives a view of Gangapurna. We will have a complete rest and lifetime views of the Annapurna Ranges while trekking back the same way back to Himalaya-Hotel.

DAY 10: Trek to Chomrong at 2170m/7119ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 6 - 7 hrs; Total Descent 870m.

DAY 11: Trek to Landruk at 1640m/5381ft (overnight in guest house). Total Walking Time 5 - 6 hrs; Total Ascent 350m; Total Descent 800m.

We head down to ‘New Bridge’ leading to a charming Gurung village called Landruk. Here it makes us feel like we are back to the heat of the lower elevations. The walk is above a river crossing small streams using suspension bridges. As usual, a few steep climbs are required to get us over ridges and then back down to the river.

DAY 12: Trek to Dhampus (1650m/5413ft), then trek to Phedi (1130m/3707ft), and drive back to Pokhara (827 m/2,713 ft) (overnight in hotel). Total Driving Time 0.5 hrs; Total Walking Time 6 - 7 hrs; Total Ascent 570m; Total Descent 1000m.

Dhampus is one of the largest villages on the trek. This place offers beautiful panorama view of the Himalaya. The sight of cars and local schools in this village make us feel like we are back to the civilization.

From Dhampus, its quite a steep downhill to get to Phedi, where we catch a ride back into Pokhara.

DAY 13: Return to Kathmandu (overnight in hotel).
