Mountain Marathon/Trail Running

MARATHONS IN NEPAL

For those into running, Nepal offers a true physical challenge for the mind and body. The mountainous terrain is home to marathons attracting runners from around the world. The high altitude adds another element to the challenge. Yearly international marathons take place in Everest, Annapurna, Manang and Manslu.

THE EVEREST MARATHON

This bi-event is the highest marathon in the world. It starts at Gorak Shep (5,184m) close to the 1953 Everest Base Camp. The finish line is 42km down the track at a Sherpa town named Namche Bazaar (3,446m).The Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon began in 2003 and is held every year on May 29th to commemorate the first successful Everest expedition. This course starts at the current Everest Base Camp and finishes at Namche.

The course includes rough mountain trails and high attitude making it a challenging journey. Despite being mainly a down-hill route, there are two steep uphill sections and passes snow and ice on the upper part of the race. This marathon is for serious runners seeking a real adventure, recommended for those with experience in cross county, mountain running and endurance events.

TRAIL RUNNING

Uncrowded and endless, the Nepali terrain provides many beautiful tracks for trail running. There are many trail races held throughout the year. By using the tradition trails and trade routes, runners are able to spend the evenings relaxing and recuperating with hot, sweet tea from a monastery or with a home brewed Chang beer at lodge.

TRAIL RUNNING - MUSTANG

This exhilarating competitive run amidst the truly breathtaking landscape of the Transhimalaya/Upper Mustang region will thrill the fitness enthusiast and nature lover no end. As you race at altitudes ranging from 2,900 to 4,200 metres above sea level, you will pass by thriving barley fields, remote farming villages, monasteries steeped in tradition and amazing canyons set against a sensational alpine backdrop which includes some of the world’s tallest peaks including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Following the yak-worn Mustang Trail deep within a wilderness zone of pure mystique, this 277-kilometre footrace is organized into eight manageable stages ranging from 30 to 40 kilometres in length and separated by checkpoints that include caves and age-old buildings rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture and spiritualism. This unique event takes place in April and features up to 40 runners.
