An Off-beaten trek to The Lower Dolpo - 25 Days

Join us on this 25 day tour of lower Dolpo trek in Nepal from Australia. This expedition-style trek on the rip-roaring adventure takes you to a remote and rugged unspoiled corner beyond the Himalayan Valleys, where you will witness first-hand the inspiration behind Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard and Eric Valli's Caravans.

Separated from the rest of Nepal by high passes to the south including the mighty Dhaulagiri Massif, Dolpo is also known as a ‘ba-yul’ or ‘hidden land’. The area is an isolated Himalayan sanctuary, a marvellously preserved ecosystem featuring a wonderful variety of native flora and indigenous fauna, including bharal (blue sheep), mountain goats, jackals, Tibetan wolves and the legendary snow leopard. Apart from an impressive array of alpine wildlife, this rare jewel of Nepal has preserved one of the last remnants of traditional Tibetan culture, mountain communities in which the pre-Buddhist Bonpo religion is still practised. Time has literally stood still for centuries in this spiritual sanctuary as inhabitants of Tibetan stock continue to live, cultivate and trade the way they have done for hundreds of years.

Testimonials

1. Shannon Bartier -

"Just wanted to say thank you for a fabulous time we had on our trek to Everest Base Camp and Chitwan Jungle Adventure (November 2012). I bought vouchers ...and not knowing what to expect, I was blown away by the standard of accommodation we received, both in Kathmandu and Chitwan. The local guides were so friendly and helpful...I wouldn't have made Base Camp without Bimal's help! I have been raving to everyone since returning home about how fantastic our 'holiday' was. Thank you again!".

Highlights

  • access to a fabled hidden land once closed to trekkers for years;
  • breathtaking views from several passes over 5,000 metres above sea level;
  • an opportunity to observe Nepal’s highest waterfall, originating from Phoksundo Lake;
  • exposure to a number of interesting Magar and Gurung villages set among lonely, secluded valleys;
  • an exploration of the Buddhist and Bonpo religions, with visits to Buddhist monasteries and an introduction to ancient pre-Buddhist religious practices with strong shamanistic and animistic traditions;
  • prepared meals throughout the trek along with comfortable tents for sleeping.

Recommendation

  • Far-west Nepal (especially the Dolpo region) is an up-and-coming area for trekking. This unique trek, following one of the most beautiful trekking routes in Nepal, is highly recommended for lovers of ‘out-of-the-way’ places untouched by human progress. This trekking option, however, is an expedition-style adventure, a challenging trek requiring good fitness.

Options

  • If the group departure date doesn't suit you, we can run a private group at a time specified by you (minimum of 2 travellers). Please inquire.

  • You can upgrade the accommodation at Kathmandu for a luxurious stay and add culinary experiences and tradition Hindu spa & massages.
